THE NYACK LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
December 20, 2007

In the past few weeks construction has progressed with visible results:

The excavation contractor completed additional work on drainage lines and catch basins, and has been digging the cellar and removing dirt. The new cellar will be used to house mechanical equipment, heating systems and also provide room for general storage.

Once excavation is finished, the concrete crew will return to set the forms and pour the foundations for the new building. Weather permitting this should be completed within the next three weeks.

There will probably be a break in major activity during January while we wait for the steel to be manufactured. Then by mid-February steel erection will commence. At some point the south wall of the existing east wing will be removed and reconfigured to allow for a connecting corridor between the existing building and the new. This modification will require us to remove about 8,000 books (non-fiction and Reference) and place them in storage until the building is completed.

Yesterday we appeared before the Nyack Architectural Review Board and were granted an amendment to our plans to allow us to enclose three terraces on the corners of the upper level of the new building. We were concerned with safety and security issues, as well as additional insurance costs and the lost of floor space for seating and book materials. We thank the Board for their consideration.

12/03/07 Update

THE NYACK LIBRARY
December 3, 2007

In the month of November our contractor had underpinned the Stevenson House (Klay Gallery & Art Café), partially graded the construction site, and installed some of the drainage system. The Library has been issued a building permit for concrete and steel work.

The elevator bid has been awarded and today the well for the elevator was drilled. In the next few week excavating and pouring of the concrete foundation will take place. Detailed architectural drawings progress and features of the interior design continues to be refined.

Steel is now expected to be delivered in February 2008 and a target of completing the new building around November 2008.

The time has finally arrived - construction on the Library expansion will begin Monday, October 22, 2007.

  • On Tuesday October 16th, The Nyack Library Board of Trustee’s approved the first three bids of excavation, concrete and steel. The Construction Manager has mobilized these trades and work begins on the long awaited library expansion.

  • The current overall construction schedule is:
Excavation and concrete work completed late November 2007.
Steel is expected to be delivered and erected in January 2008.
Completion of the new building around September 2008.
Complete renovations to the existing building by January 2009.

  • Construction fences will go up Monday to block off all access behind the Stevenson House (Klay Gallery & Art Café) to the parking lot and the back portion of the DePew House. For safety reasons only construction workers will be allowed on the construction site.

  • By mid November the Library will be moving portions of the collection to off-site storage, rearrange remaining portions of the collections, and clear out 8’ from the south wall on three levels. It is the Library’s intention to have material that is stored off-site be available next business day.
